Ferrite Magnets

The name given to the standard grade of plastic bonded Neodymium magnet is either BREMAG or Bremag10N. It is produced by Bunting Magnetics Europe in facilities based both in the UK and USA.

Plastic Bonded rare earth magnets, such as BREMAG, are becoming more and more popular for use within new products, with increased performance levels and cost reductions too. Once these plastic bonded magnets have been compression moulded to net shape, they don’t need machining any further thanks to the high tolerance levels attained. For products that have a premium on available space and weight, the high magnetic values present, along with the smaller size prove to be invaluable and allows for miniaturisation.

As well as our range of standard grades, we are also able to produce what we call special blended (SB) grades. These grades can be tailored to an individual customer’s requirements, where the remanent magnetisation and energy product of the magnet is unique whilst still maintaining the main qualities of the standard grades (elevated temperature properties and high resistance to demagnetisation) on offer. Furthermore, isotropic and anisotropic powders are coming to the market which have been specifically manufactured to allow for higher density and higher temperatures suitable for applications that cost less to produce.

A production process that is able to manufacture parts without the need for additional machining and that comes with next to no wastage in terms of material, is seen as very positive, especially at a time, when concerns have been growing over the high cost of NdFeB magnets as well as the security of their supply. BREMAG magnets feature other benefits too, such as a very effective mechanical strength, an ability to multi-pole magnetise complicated magnetisation patterns (before or after assembly in the final application) as well as featuring an electrical conductivity which keeps eddy current loss in high speed applications to a minimum.

Plastic bonded NdFeB magnets can be effectively used without an external protective coating, unlike their sintered counterparts. This helps to bring costs down as well as actually improving the strength of adhesion when it comes to bonding magnets to various other metal components.

Brushless dc motors and encoders are highly suited applications for BREMAG magnets, thanks largely to their ability to press and multi-pole magnetise single component magnet rings. These are not the only applications they can be used for though, with latching solenoids (used in position sensors) and actuators (used in door and window locking and lift motors) also finding a use for these magnets. Electrical powered assisted steering systems also make good use of the multi-pole, skewered magnetisation ring magnets, offering excellent control feedback. In fact, a good range of industries benefit from this particular magnet type, including the manufacture of domestic appliances, aerospace and the automotive industry.

As a UK manufacturer, Bunting Magnetics feature a wide range of tools. We have the capability of producing prototype samples, whilst cutting down significantly on those often long lead times seen for other types of material. Plastic bonded magnets can be machined easily and this allows us to produce samples to size, even if we don’t have a tool in the specific size. Sintered and ceramic based magnets are not as flexible in this regard.
