Supplied as standard with variable speed controls the motors and our own Finite Element Designed magnetic system that allows one unit to remove both very small flake in the plastic recycling industry up to large pieces of non-ferrous materials. Bunting’s Eddy Current Separators are mainly used in industries that predominantly involve recycling such as electronics recycling (WEEE), construction, demolition, wood recycling, incineration ash, plastics recycling and Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF’s). Designed to tackle and separate non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, they can effectively be used for most applications that need to eliminate non-ferrous materials from the product flow.

How it Works

  • Eddy Current Separation utilises a magnetic rotor with alternating polarity.
  • This spins quickly inside a non-conductive drum which in turn is driven by a conveyor belt.
  • The external drum is effectively used as a head pulley which rotates at belt speed.
  • The internal rotor rotates at a higher speed than the drum.
  • This creates a very strong repelling force through the induction of Eddy Currents.
  • Non-Ferrous metals are thrown from the product flow as they are rejected by the alternating magnetic field.
  • In most applications, the ECS is used in line with other separation equipment to ensure a clean recycled product.

PR039 Bunting Metal Separation Module Cleans Recycled Plastics for Recapture Plastics

Bunting Magnetics Europe Ltd has manufactured and supplied a complete Metal Separation Module and Metal Separator to Recapture Plastics to cleanse recycled plastic of metal. The Metal Separation Module consists of a large Vibratory Feeder that delivers material onto a strong Magnetic Drum before passing over an Eddy Current Separator.

Designed to tackle and separate non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, they can effectively be used for most applications that need to eliminate non-ferrous materials from the product flow.

As the name suggests, the eddy current separator creates an eddy current when fed with material. It is this current which makes any non-ferrous metals, which are at the discharge end, repel the magnetic rotor. So, the non-ferrous debris, having been separated from the remainder of the product flow can then leave the separator at a different trajectory. The material that hasn’t been repelled by the current is easily separated from the rest thanks to a splitter, which divides up the two separate collections of material, and sent in a different direction. In most cases, the eddy current separators are implemented further down the line than ferrous separation and in conjunction with a magnetic separator, can work in tandem as a unit for comprehensive metal separation.

The eddy current separators from Bunting Magnetics are easy to clean and maintain. They feature a drop down side panel which one person can lower easily and then conduct a speedy and efficient belt change to get things back up and running with the minimum of fuss. Just a single tool is needed to loosen the belt, the side panel is then dropped down and the belt replaced and re-tracked. The rotor and belt both have variable speed control available, which means the throw and the splitter (which is adjustable) can be set up to optimise the recovery process. The Eddy Current Separator features an endless belt which is constructed from high quality urethane with 3 sweeper cleats and a 1.5 inch flex-wall which are designed to push off the gathering ferrous contaminants. Outside the flex-wall, acting as a double seal protection, is a secondary brush seal which helps to prevent material finding its way into the conveyor frame.

Working out which size eddy current separator is needed will very much depend on the various applications used, their throughputs and the kind of material that is to be conveyed across the unit. Bunting’s range of eddy current separators come in 26, 36, 48 and 60 inch widths.
